Sansum Diabetes Research Institute conducts clinical research as part of its mission to prevent, treat and cure diabetes.
What Is Clinical Research and Why Is It Important?
In medical research, clinical trials are conducted with subjects who have a particular diagnosis or set of characteristics, usually to evaluate a new treatment, medication or device. Advances in medicine and science are the result of new ideas and approaches developed through research. The people who volunteer their time and energy to be involved in such research studies make a crucially important contribution to these medical and scientific advances.
Why Would I Be Interested in Participating in a Clinical Trial?
People volunteer to take part in clinical trials for many reasons.

- Participants in a clinical trial are among the first to receive new research treatments. They gain access to promising drugs, for example, long before these compounds are approved for the marketplace. On the other hand, the new treatment may be shown to be less effective than the standard treatment or may have unacceptable side effects.
- Participants are carefully monitored during the trial.
- Participants usually receive study-related supplies, medications, laboratory tests, and study procedures at no cost.
- Many participants find personal satisfaction in contributing to a research effort that may help others.

What Should I Consider Before I Decide to Participate in a Clinical Trial?
"Informed consent" is a key part of any clinical trial. Informed consent means that participants are given information so they can understand what is involved in a trial, including its potential benefits and risks, and then decide freely to take part in it or not. People considering participating in clinical research often wish to discuss it with their health care providers.
